Lately it has been "regrouping" time at The Traveling Door. We have been tweaking and redoing our work spaces and sharing ideas for where and exactly when our next sale will be. The plan is for a bigger sale in October but we were even thinking of smaller party type sales in peoples homes in the meantime. If you have any venue ideas please click on the comments and leave us your clever thoughts. We love to hear from you.
Recently we hit the road and went to some small rural shops down by the Amish area of Kalona. We were looking for unique display items and creative inspiration.
I'm not sure we were really all that successful in that regard, but just being together seems to bring out the creative best within each of us.
We did see these fun hang tags on some of the handmade items detailing the piece and the artist. A little something something you might see us incorporate.
Sometimes you need to get out and look around if only to discover what you don't want or what doesn't work for you. Regardless, the trip was definitely fun and I think we would all do it again in a heartbeat.
Sally directed us to a nursery in the area that sold these immense hanging baskets of petunias. They were HUGE and only $16.00! The problem was with four of us there wouldn't be any room in the car for the trip back home.
Next, when the others mentioned stopping by the Amish grocery in town I really wondered what they were thinking. Had they met me????? I don't even cook! For me going to the grocery store is a drudgery and not exactly what I would call fun. But hey, being the good sport that I am, I tagged along. When we pulled up into the parking lot, I can't lie, I was less than impressed.
It was just this long low white frame building with a sign on the roof that looked like it had been there since the 50's. True, I've been in the suburbs too long but I couldn't figure out why anyone would come all the way out here for a gallon of milk or whatever. I can get organic at home! Could it really be all that different here than what I could pick up at Super Target or HyVee? Yes it can and that is why we all need friends that are different from ourselves. They keep us open-minded and expose us to things and ideas in life that we would otherwise miss. Thank you Traveling Door. I would have never stopped here but now I can't wait to go back.
The packaging was so cool in its simplicity and the prices were ridiculously low.
I had to be careful taking pictures because this grocery is owned and operated by the Amish and they do not like to be photographed. I only had the camera on my phone butI did get a couple of the pictures of the Traveling Door ladies.
Anyway, it was a fun day and now we are getting ready to get back to work. Hopefully I will have some items ready to post on- line for purchase by next week. Keep checking back and don't forget to give us some feedback of what you would like to see in future shows, venue ideas, or whatever is on your mind.
