BeColorful Color of the Week - Pale Peach

Color rocks my world.

There are very few colors that I don't like.

Pale peach, though is a bit of a stretch for me.

I like it in some things, like faux pearls

or cosmetics

but when it comes to decorating

it is definitely not a go to color for me.

When I think of peach I have visions of this

or this.

I have no idea who these pictures belong to.

I found them on an ugly room site where I think people were submitting their before pictures for a makeover.

I have not suddenly gone and become a mean girl grown up.

I do hope this poor woman won the contest though.

I'd feel better knowing she had won a new dining room or at least some window curtains, upholstery fabric and wall art.

When I started to write this week's BeColorful Color of the Week post

I decided to challenge myself.

So I chose a color that very honestly makes my skin crawl.

Perhaps it was because I worked in a bridal department while I was going to school.

EVERY bride chose knit bridesmaid dresses in apricot, or shrimp but really they were all just different names for the same color... a pale peach.

It was totally overdone and I have never felt the same about this color since.

That said,

Okay, I kind of like that sofa when it is done in a contemporary shape and piped with black. I wouldn't have thought of that but I like the contrast of soft and dramatic.

I'm still not sold.

 

Just a touch in a rug is rather pretty though.

These soft colors work well together.

That mag is my all time favorite for gorgeous reality based decor).

 

 

I also am more apt to be on board when I see it is stacked against dark red.

Interesting.

I like it best though when it is paired with these garden pinks and yellows and that plum? rug.

Oh my.

I'm inspired now.

This I could definitely live with.

Then there is this design diva that actually made it work with just neutral grays and taupe and a compliment of yellow.

 Casual, clean and cheerful -

  another look I can appreciate.

So I guess I will have to add pale peach to the list of colors to consider.

I just needed to give it a chance and see it used in updated styles

and with a fresh color mixes.

BeColorful Bird House

 

 
A while back a client gave me a birdhouse she wanted to have painted up.

It looked like this.

It was up to me to bring on the color.

The front was like a coloring book.

It was the roof and sides where I could have some unleashed fun.

 

 

 

 

A bit of paint, some stamping and some embellishments.

 

 

Too bad one my favorite sides is the back side that hangs on the wall.

 
 

It definitely works in my Waterloo Smoothie  colored room but she is thinking of putting it in her freshly painted sparkling pear green kitchen.

 

 

I can't wait to see some pinks and oranges reds and aquas in this space.

You couldn't help but be happy in a room like this.

This colorful birdhouse should fit right in.

Motivated Monday March 28th

Welcome to Motivated Monday

 

 

It was another great week for inspiration.

You all amaze me.

For starters I was totally wowed by this glamourous paint treatment by Chrissie on an already pretty but not all that unique dresser.

She gave it a whole new vibe.

I adore those painted drawers.

It is so fun to find that unexpected touch of whimsy.

 

Then there were these Thin Mint Cookies from Liz at

Everything Yellow.

Some may think I am showing nepotism since this darling little cook is my own baby girl but she has submitted before and this is the first time I have featured her.

I just knew this would be a recipe we all want.

I awwed out loud when I saw this oh so cool mirror at

Pink Postcard.

 

I would love to try this technique on something for Traveling Door.

Love it Denise.

Finally I was in total awe of this stellar

colorful little cabinet submitted by

Thrift Store Decor Junky.

I was immediately smitten by the hearts and leopard print

and then amazed by the detailing in the floral design.

How many hours must be in this piece?

Pillow of the Week #45 - A Touch of Sticks

She may not be for everybody but then I'm not here to bring you the yawns and ordinary. A bit edgy and that one controversial item is what I like to flaunt. If you are on board with that you might find this leather lovely enchanting. You would have to love her a lot though because she doesn't come cheap. If you are a fan of the one of a kind Stick's style then this could be a fun touch of whimsy for your family room, bedroom, entry, or craft room. I would think of her as a guardian angel. I would probably give her name and leave her out all year long. You can find her here.

A Bloomin' Susan

Tally up another project completed for The Traveling Door Market.

I decided to call her Bloomin' Susan.

Can you tell I'm longing for Spring?

I started out with an unfinished wooden lazy susan and sanded and primed it then painted the whole piece yellow.

Next I used a charger plate as a template to trace my inside circle.

The flowers are a free hand design.

Paint the border red and the edge white then add the black stripes.

Finish with some polka dots and a coat of poly and call it done.

 
 

Less than six weeks now until The Traveling Door so no rest for the weary.

Onto the next project.

A Can of Worms aka The Hazards of Updating

 

The painter called last month and said he had some time to paint the hubby's office.

Little did I know what that can of paint would lead to.

After he finished painting the office I lead him up to the third floor to get some advice on the wallpapered boys spaces.

You guessed it. He's coming back to help me with that redo.

After twelve years we knew it was time for an update in that part of the house too.

We have made very limited progress up here.

It's true. Things will look worse before they look better.

 

The plumber has been here and disconnected everything so that the new floor can be installed.

Oh yeah.

I need to get that ordered.

That is project #1.

2. remove wallpaper

3. replace lighting

4. repaint

5. The verdict was terminal regarding the sink so number five is finding a replacement for my original one.

6. replace or add the BeColorful touch to the mirror/ medicine cabinet

7. paint the outside of the tub

8. order new faucet for tub

9 add new towels and accessories

That should be enough for starters but it doesn't end there.

In the meantime we began switching some beds around on the second floor.

This used to be Lizzie's room.

I'm pretty sure the marriage is working

and she isn't moving back home. :)

So.... add this space to the to do list.

We redid this room when she was a sophomore in college - not that long ago but it is time to let go of the pink and think of it more as a guest room and less as a young girl's retreat.

So sad. Why do they all have to go and grow up on me?

Someone is coming to pick up her bed today and I will be moving this bed from the real guest room into Liz's old room.

The projects in my head are really starting to add up.

How much will it all cost?

I would like that designer look but on a big box budget .

I really have my work cut out for me this time around.

For starters,

we will be bringing a king size bed into this room.

I have the bed already but the bedding will not work so -

1. Find new bedding for this room.

2. That God awful light fixture ( and yes I picked it out, but twelve years ago) needs to go. This is an old house and the windows in this room are painted shut. Argh. So I know the practical thing would be a ceiling fan. I want to make my guests comfortable right?

I think I do.

Yes, I do.

Is it wrong, though, that my bigger concern is what will it look like?

I could really see a pendant fixture here.

So comfort or looks?

Do not even suggest the fan with the ceiling light. It won't be happening. I have never seen one that I like.

3. We also bought a flatscreen TV several months ago to replace this one that I think came over on the Mayflower and now will no longer work without a cable box.

so project number three is to get the new bad boy out of the box and on the wall. 

4. Now back to Liz's room. I think I am ready for a new wall color here. but what?

I will be reusing the white bedding with the black piping that was in the guest room so really all options are open.  Repainting this room will be project number four.

I'm not sure what is up with this photo but I don't have time to edit today.

The ceiling is not pink but it might have been pretty if I had thought to do that. 

5. All the accessories in this room have passed their prime. So new lamps and tchotchkies will be in order. Number five will be fun and easy.

Five projects here plus the nine in the boys bathroom equals fourteen.

Then there is this jack and jill bathroom between the two rooms.

Enough said.

This will be projects 15 - 21at least.

We can cut some corners on that third floor boys bath but this one sees a lot more use and needs to be throughly gutted. I can't even let my mind go there quite yet.

Let me give you a hint.

We painted over the tile here - twelve years ago.

It's nasty.

One bathroom at a time though.

Whose idea was it buy this money pit?

It is never really done.

By the time I had worked my way through the whole house twelve years had gone by.

 So now that we have been through the whole house once it is time to start over.

Some spaces were just kind of glossed over - like this bathroom and they are in need of some serious attention on round two.

It is so true that one project really does lead to another.

Last month I pretended that I was walking into my own home for the first time.

I imagined I was a prospective buyer.

Funny, how I had walked by some things so many times I didn't even see them anymore.

It was a rude awakening for me.

With my eyes opened I realized it is past time to get back to work here.

We had been busy living life and I don't regret that one bit and I don't intend to stop now but I will have to direct some of my energies back in to this big old albatross that we call home.

Yes, it all started with that can of gray paint.

 Was it really paint or a can of worms?

I'm thinking there won't be very many new shoes or handbags in my spring and summer. :0

Oh well, in the end I can only hope it will all be worth it.

I finished up that Wonderfully Wacky Mirror in turquoise

and then went on to paint this unusually shaped wooden bowl.

Again, I went with turquoise and flowers.

I'm feeling the spring vibe.

This was a wooden bowl I purchased at TJ Maxx

and then gave it the BeColorful treatment.

Catching Up

 
A James Update, The Texas Home Show, and a

Wonderfully Wacky Mirror

This has been a harried week.

Thank you again for all of your concern and prayers for our family and our son James.

He is still in Tokyo and other than being a bit hungry he is relatively safe.

 Even so, I now have the Tokyo Embassy on my cell phone

and I read their updates daily.

Never thought that would happen.

While all of this was happening Mike and I were in Dallas.

We loved seeing friends but I'm not sure we were the best of guests.

Our bodies were in Texas but our hearts and minds were in Japan.

Despite everything we did get to see the Home Show in the new Cowboy Stadium.

The jumbo-tron is  truly immense.

It's like they say -

everything really is bigger in Texas.

 

Yes, that is  our boy Ty.

It wasn't a lot different from our home show here.

It was just bigger and in a much cooler place.

I did find a few things to put on my wish list.

 

For example,

I really think I need one of these bad boys to help me bring my Christmas tree up from the storage area and then take it back down again in January.

Yep, that would work.

Then, when we eventually remodel our bathroom

I would love to have one of these ingenious little devices in the cupboard to keep all of my styling tools ready and organized.

I took a picture of the display so I can remember exactly what to ask for whenever that time comes.

I know Mike is hoping I forget. :)

I'm pretty sure I saw an eye roll.

How great would this be though?

Ahhhhhh. Organizational love.

 

We came home on Monday and since then I have been catching up a bit on my painting.

Remember this wonderfully wacky mirror I was painting for a client?

I almost forgot to take the before picture.

I started with green but then I put words on it.

Didn't like them.

Painted it black.

Then red.

Now it looks like this.

 

We are deciding if it really needs knobs.

 

 
 

 

 

I did find some fun ones but they add to the cost.

Thank You For Your Concern. James and Japan - An Update

National Geographic

 

The news out of Japan is truly sobering and the images of the devastation are mind numbing.

For our family this story has definitely hit home.

Three weeks ago I wrote about putting our son on a plane and sending him off to begin a new life and job in Japan.

Our biggest concern was that we might have to go a whole year without seeing him.

That seems so trivial now.

Little did I know that a mere three weeks later my biggest concern would be nuclear fall out.

It was early Friday morning when our cell phones began vibrating and ringing relentlessly. We were inundated with calls, texts and emails wondering about James.

We were in Dallas on business and had not yet turned on the television so we were clueless to what had happened.

Fortunately there was also a brief email from James telling us he was okay. So we were able to retain some sense of sanity. He actually didn't even seem too concerned at that point and mentioned that he had even posted a bit of video to youtube.

In retrospect, it is clear that James had no idea  how serious the quake in Japan was or any knowledge of the resulting tsunami.

Our contact with him for the next thirty six hours was sporadic.

Being away from home we haven't had as much access to television so our phones have been our connection to what is happening on the other side of the world. What did we ever do before smart phones.

We must have checked  the news services, facebook and our emails sixty times yesterday.

It brought tears to my eyes to hear from so many of you, people I only know through blogging, and people I may never meet physically. Thank you for your words of comfort and your prayers. It has meant so much to us.

Finally last night my cell phone rang and it was James. There were, of course, tears of relief. It was so reassuring to hear his voice.

It was obvious that he was exhausted. He is working for NTT Docomo which is like ATT here in the US..They had sent his team up the eastern coast of Japan to help restore emergency service to an area devastated by the quake.

It was sobering to hear last night that he doesn't think they will be sending his team that direction again. The way he tells it he said, " Mom, we can lay all the cable and repair the connections but it has to have something to connect to and that isn't there anymore"

He has seen some things that will be burned on his brain forever and that is difficult to think about but knowing that he is able to help in any small way definitely makes his family proud.

James was interviewed by WHO in Des Moines yesterday by phone. You can see that interview here.

Oxygen - Another Recommended Read

 

 

I'm a hot mess and not in a good way.

 I've had a cold for what seems like forever.

It has been one of those hacking, nose honking, watery eyed colds that has nobody wanting to be in the same zip code as I am.

You know it is bad when you have a selection of cough drops because you have been dining on them for so long that you are now craving options. :)

That said, if you look hard enough there have been a few upsides to this whole convalescence period.

1. I haven't been in the stores for like ten days. 

   Chase Bank and American Express are getting concerned and thinking about sending out an all points bulletin.

My account balances have never been this low this many days into the month. :)

 

2. My husband doesn't want me contaminating anything in the kitchen so I haven't         cooked anything for four or five days. Not that that is terribly uncommon but I needed a number 2. 

3. I live with a germ-a- phobe so I have basically been relegated to the bedroom. which has allowed me to do a bit of extra reading.

My latest read was Oxygen by Carol Cassella

This book is gripping right from the the first page. The characters are believable and the author has an easy and insightful style of writing that help the reader to identify and empathize with several of the characters.

It is the story of an anesthesiologist that is at the top of her game and then the unthinkable happens and she loses a small child on the operating table.

The plot is an interesting dicotomy of the world of medicine and the justice system.

It is the kind of story that you can imagine hearing on the nightly news but this book explains the story behind the salacious headlines.

Although there is enough tension to make you want to keep reading just "one more chapter" I felt that this book was more about the psychology behind the story. The protagonist is going through the challenge of her life and this results in her projecting some of her own previously unresolved issues onto the mother who has lost her only child. It is a novel and successful writing technique that leads the reader through the results of the characters' choices helps  to reveal the protagonist's inner struggles.

A definite thumbs up for this one.

BeColorful Color of the Week - Periwinkle

 

 

Periwinkle

Even the name of this shade sounds fun.

It is somewhere between violet and baby blue.

It can be paler or darker but form me it needs to be bold.

It was my "go to" color in the coloring box when I was little.

Then somewhere along the way to becoming who I am today this vibrant violet blue got edged out by the reds and greens.

Perhaps it has something to do with the feeling that I have always thought of periwinkle as a rather feminine color.

Combine that with the fact that I live with a boy and the result is that this color really hasn't had much of a presence in our home.

I may have to rethink that because after researching images for this post

I have unleashed a new found passion for this all too absent color.

Nobody would suggest you dial up the controversial with every decorating element in your house

but a touch of whimsey on the walls, in  your accessory choices, or that

Animal House Bathroom Step 1

It's really going to happen .

We are going to take our Animal House bathroom from this.

To something with a whole lot more sass.

Something like this.

or maybe a celebration of color like this.

 

I've been thinking a green like this.

 

 

Because this bathroom is clear up on the third floor it is seldom used unless everybody is home at once.

 

We would really like to keep the costs here to a minimum.

Looking ahead our biggest expenses will be the flooring and the plumber.

To put the floor in the tub, radiator, and toilet will need to be removed.

The radiator and the tub ( without any shut off valves) will be the tricky part.

We will have to wait until it is a bit warmer to pull out the radiator.

The entire system needs to be drained first and it is still a bit early in the season to shut down the boiler.

That said, we thought we would forge ahead with some of the purchasing decisions.

So how do you feel about this?

We think this would be a good look for this 95 year old bathroom.

 

I would love to save this old sink that is most likely original to the house

but as you can see it is wearing the badges of age.

 

It has such a pretty shape but in the end it is a matter of $$$.

I am sure it will be considerably less to replace it with a new one.

 

We did take down the shower curtain bar.

There are other showers in the house.

We decided to go with something less practical and more visually appealing.

So we are ordering this little lovely.

 

Then there is the matter of lighting.

 

 

I want to stay with the vintage vibe and so the Big Box 90's light fixture needs to move on out too.

I saw this one today and thought it might work.

 

 

I've been down with a beast of a cold for over a week

but it amazing how the thought of a decorating project can improve my outlook.

 

So it is Sunday night and if you were here last week you might remember the issues I was having with my McLInky.
