Every January I go into all out organization mode. This year wasn't any different. I begin by purging. So far this month I have taken two car loads to the Goodwill and just yesterday I took another load to my favorite consignment store.
I can barely begin to tell you how liberating it feels to rid myself of all those clothes that no longer fit me or my lifestyle or those items that from day one were bad impulse purchases. I like to refer to them as my "little burdens" and it was wonderful yesterday to be waving goodbye to them in my rear-view mirror.
So after spending the last three weeks packing away Christmas decor and then clearing out closets and drawers I felt it was time to reward myself.
I've been thinking about my little splurge for a whole year. In fact, it was about this time last year, in a post about organizational ideas for the bathroom, that I first wrote about
I honestly have never watched an entire episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashisans so until I wrote my post last year I had never seen or heard about these pricey cosmetic drawers made of acrylic. It was love at first sight though. Immediately I could see what all the excitement was about.
They are beautiful. This particular version is 12"x12"x15" high. The picture shown is two units stacked together. I was looking to purchase only one unit but with the divided inserts and top handle the single five drawer unit was going to run $312.00 plus shipping. Yowza. It also has about a six week wait time. That said, the reviews all seem to be great for this product and so many of the purchasers have stressed how well made these drawers are. Still, I thought I would look around and check out some other options.
I soon discovered that the actual unit used by the Kardashian women is created by Sherrie Blossom
Again, the reviews are outstanding. The five drawer set that I was interested in though runs $395.00 plus $45.00 in shipping.
This is probably the creme- de- la- creme when it comes to clear cubes. Like the Original Clear Cube, this system also takes about six weeks to arrive. There are some definite pluses to this unit though. I really like that it comes with several adjustable dividers or inserts to create a more customizable storage unit. Ultimately, and I am a believer in the adage that you get what you pay for, I just couldn't justify the cost for this organizer.
So, I continued on my search.
I wasn't crazy but I also didn't want a cheaper plastic version. What makes these cases so pretty and yet functional is that they are made from a heavy grade lucite acrylic that has that special sparkle that plastics don't. I also like the way that these heavier units are constructed so that the drawers glide easily and feel substantial.
The Container Store seemed like a viable place to start my search and yes,the price for The Container Store version was much better at $119.00 but it is also considerably smaller measuring 12 3/4" x 6 1/2" x 12"
One of the most economical versions of these clear storage drawers is the
This five drawer measures 10.2 x 6.9 x 6.3"
A lot of women that opt for this product order multiples and stack them. Yes it definitely has a smaller footprint but if your counter top space is at a premium this could be a terrific alternative. Especially considering the five drawer is only $27.00. Muji also offers two, three, and four drawer cases. I really like how they look either stacked or side by side.
of the Muji drawers next to an Original Clear Cube I was reminded of how much smaller they really are and why the Clear Cube is so much more money.
Still, I can definitely see where this is definitely a viable alternative. True, the drawers are smaller and shallower but my bigger concern was the quality of these units and if the drawers would open and close as well as their more expensive counterparts. I watched a couple of YouTube videos on the Muji drawers, and at least in the videos I watched, the quality did not seem to be on par with the pricier units. Then again, how well they hold up long term may not be as important to you as initial cost.
When I googled Clear Cubes one of the first acrylic drawer organizers to appear was from
The five drawer style plus flip lid is the tallest unit I have seen. It is 18" high and is 12" wide x 12" deep.
It sells for $179.00 plus free shipping via Amazon. This is obviously a great price for such a heavy weight acrylic system. It comes with multiple dividers and inserts which is a plus but the customer reviews stated that the dividers didn't fit well. That was a negative for me and is probably what kept me from seriously considering this style.
The next acrylic drawer system I looked at was the MD4X.
This is one of the largest five drawer units I considered. It measures 12" x 14" x 15.5.
Made in the USA by Mardisplay, this appears to be another quality designed unit.
On the company website it sells for $219.00 but it is also currently available on Amazon for $189.00 with free shipping.
$189.00 from Amazon
I added this system to my cart twice and twice I removed it. It seems to be so well made and all the reviews were five star. What stopped me was that there weren't any divider options and other than the exterior dimensions the product information was practically nonexistent. I also thought that 14" deep would take up too much valuable real-estate from our counter top.
Instead, I finally decided on this five drawer cube with a flip lid from
It is 100% Lucite Acrylic and handmade not molded. It measures a hefty but not cumbersome 12" x 12" x 15.5" high - the same dimensions as The Original Clear Cube. Like the Clear Cube and the MD4X this case also received glowing reviews.
Purchased through Beauti Cosmetics this unit sells for $300.00 but is available from Amazon for $169.00 and includes free shipping. I was also happy to hear that it should only take about a week to arrive.
It comes with two H and two X style inserts and unlike the Clearcube the reviews are that the dividers fit snuggly.
So now I wait but I am feeling pretty confident in my purchase. Yes, $169.00 is still a lot to spend on a storage system but this is something I will use every day. It is one of those little life luxuries that just seem to make me happy. :D Besides, I remind myself that even if it isn't absolutely perfect it is still about two hundred and fifty dollars LESS than the most expensive option. Yay me. Saving money already. :D
